VID: The Good Soldier [Heroes]
Remember when I posted that list of vids in progress (or soon to be in progress) way back in August, with the implication that I'd be finishing one of them next?

I lied, 'cause they were all being obnoxious and this one wasn't. :D? As always, many many thanks to [info]shati for the thoroughly awesome beta.

Lyrics:

Gunfire in the street
Where we used to meet
Echoes out a beat
And the bass goes "bomb"
Right over my head
Step over the dead
Remember what you said
You know the part about life
Is just a waking dream
Well, I know what you mean
But that ain't how it seems right here, right now
There's nowhere left to hide
'Cause God is on our side
I keep telling myself

I am trying to see
I am trying to believe
This is not where I should be
I am trying to believe

This is one of my fav songs from NIN's Year Zero and I think it fits the character of Parkman really well.

Great job with the vid, especially heart the "and the bass goes 'bonb'" bit!

And it was great how you cut the song short and finished like you started, on the crayon drawing of 'mommy and me'.

Loved it!

P.S. isn't it weird how well NIN songs manage to fit with Heroes? That's something I've found anyway, a lot of good Heroes vids I've seen seem to use a NIN song. I'm gonna look at making one too, using Capital G to study Nathan's character.

Anyway, I'm just rambling now. Sorry for making you put up with it!

Hee! Rambling is fine, believe me. *grins* Yeah, I am in love with Year Zero; that entire album has become my personal soundtrack to "Five Years Gone," and even outside the confines of that episode, a lot of it fits the Heroesverse freakishly well.

Anyway, thank you! I'm really glad you enjoyed the vid.

Oh, nice. I particularly like the way you matched image to lyric in the fourth line (:18) and the evocative scene you used for the next two (right over my head/step over the dead).

Very, very nice melding of FYG!Matt with nonAU!Matt, and -- am I seeing a bleached/blue color wash on FYG!Matt in contrast to the warmer colors for nonAU!Matt? Not sure if that starkness is added by you or from the source, but I really, really like the subtle contrast with it here.

Good blend of image flow to the beat of the music, too. :D

The one piece of "didn't work for me as well as I would have liked" that I'd say was that although I liked the ending image, it seemed that the vid ended really, really abruptly. I went back and checked my file, etc., to make sure that I hadn't just had something glitch out and end early. But that's a tiny niggling thing in a vid of overall awesome, so.

I did do a teeny bit of color correction on a few clips, but by and large, it's all from the source -- they drenched the 5YGverse in a lot of blue when they were editing the episode. It is startling to see the contrast when Hiro leaps back to 2006 at the end, man. *g*

And... *nods* The abrupt ending was a deliberate choice, some of which was rooted in the fact that the song itself (even when unedited) ends really abruptly, too -- but some of it was also tied into my thinking that Matt died during the Peter-Sylar showdown, as well as the 5YGverse as a whole having a pretty abrupt ending in canon. So there were reasons! Just...reasons that I'll have to clarify more in the vid itself next time around. *sheepish*

Anyway, thank you so much for the feedback! I'm glad that most of it worked for you. :D

Wow, wow. I loved it. Matt needs more love! Watching your vid gave me chills because I am still sort of kind of forever worried that somehow what happed in Five Years Gone is going to end up being kind of like what happens at the end of the show, and, you know, I can see it. I can see Matt having to make the decisions that lead him there.

I loved the use of motion and, at the end, the flying and Nathan changing into Sylar bits that happened on the beat. V. cool. And the 'boom' at the beginning was pretty awesome as well. I'd have to watch it again to get into more specifics (and timestamps...), but, yeah, loved it.

He does! Sometimes I feel very alone on my tiny island of Matt-love in this fandom. *hugs him* I'm hoping that he won't ever go down that path, but...yeah, it's like you said. Even though we've diverged from the route that would've taken us to 5YG, it still doesn't seem entirely outside the realm of possibility that Matt could go Dark Side.

And thank you :D I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I have no words. None. At all. I love, love, love, love Matt, and I think I love this song. Someone else commented on the Nathan shifting to Sylar thing, and yeah that part and the 'boom' part knocked my socks clear off.

Ahahahaha owloveit.

I particularly like how you synchronized the action and the handclaps. Very nice. I think my favorite is Claire jerking to a halt -- but Matt grabbing the rail in Isaac's loft (0:58, I think) and looking up (0:30) are fantastic, too. So subtle.

And on the not subtle and AWESOME side, the bass goes BOOM and the Nathan-Sylar overlay. Eeeeheeheeheee.

I like how you keep coming back to the drawing, too, though I agree with [info]silveraspen that the ending is very abrupt. That fits with the song's rhythm, but I don't have time to absorb which part of the picture it's focusing on. Whereas at 1:02, it's really easy to see "MATTHEW."

*points upthread* The abrupt ending was an intentional choice, which I should've clarified better in the vid itself, but, yeah. Next time around I am definitely keeping this in mind. :)

And, hee, thank you! I think I may have had a little too much fun with synching up particular movements on the beat with this song. Beat whore powers, activate!

'Beat whore' is possibly the best way to sum up my reaction now. *giggling* But this is not BAD. The antithesis of bad! Yes!

You managed to do what the show hasn't yet done for me, which is make Matt make sense in the context of the larger world -- which is the mark of any really good vid, I think, because a good vid is an act of criticism. Thus: good vid. *grins* Very good vid.

I'm so into the off-kilter editing style that you used because it goes so well with musicality. The lyrics are implimented well without going to far. I especially love the moments at :16, the matching of the pat down in the :30's, the beat on Claire at :42, and the skipping at :44. The ending, from 1:12 on is downright perfect with the beats.

Your thoughts and work on Matt is beautiful. The music is so striking and well suited. The new Nine Inch Nails album has so many great tracks. I'd love to see a vid done for every track, then assembled for my viewing pleasure. :)

Hee! I hadn't considered a vid cycle, but in the past, I've seriously thought about doing some kind of fic cycle to that album; there is far too much on Year Zero that fits way too well with both 5YG and the show in general. It would be loads of fun.

Anyway, thank you so much for the feedback! And -- *perks up* There's another Heroes vid that uses a track from that album? Where?

I have a Days of the New album that I want to make a huge multifandom vid for before I die.

It's one of mine, Hyperpower. It's not a Heroes vid though.

If I was organized in anyway shape or form, I would run a project to get bunches of different vidders to claim the rest of the tracks and make vids to them... I think I might...

I love it. In FYG, it's too easy for the drastic contrast of Hiro and Peter's evolutions to overshadow more subtle but no less terrifying transformations like Matt's. FYG was truly an amazing AU and this vid captures Matt's part in it so perfectly.

"I used to be that guy..."

Not to mention it's flawlessly edited together. Really perfect.

There should be more Matt vids but this one would still have his Five Years Gone arc covered. Great work with the lyrics, spirit and letter both. I especially liked the irony of “God is on our side” and what you did with the bridge. And every whipcrack head turn to the drumbeats marking the finish.

Fantastic, as usual. I've recced the vid in my LJ. I love how you've managed to both compare and contrast the Matt of 5YG with the Matt of Season 1, and shown how different they are, and yet how logical it is that one could grow into the other. Great stuff, and I particularly appreciated it since Matt is generally not one of my favorites, and yet you managed to make him interesting to me.
